Candles have been a source of getting light for 5000 years, but very little has been known about candlesf origin. Ancient Egyptians are credited for the first creation of candles. It is said that Egyptians used rush lights and torches, which were kinds of candles. These torches and rush lights were made by soaking the pithy core of reeds in molten tallow. In these rush lights, wick was not used. Romans created wick candles. They used these candles to aid travelers in the darkness and lighting homes. Romans also used candles at their places of worship at night. In the early days, Romans used tallow in their candles as a main ingredient, like the early Egyptians. Tallow was manufactured from sheet or cattle suet. Later, beeswax was introduced, which was produced by honeybees. Beeswax got much popularity, because it was a great development after tallow. Tallow produced a smoky flame with pungent odor, but beeswax eliminated these two problems. In several other counties, candles were made of palm oil, coconut oil, beeswax and olive oil.

In England, bayberry wax was processed for candle-making. The most primitive hollow candles were made of tallow. By the early 18th century, paraffin replaced tallow as the main element of candle- making. Today, a standard company produces the candle with the composition of 60% paraffin, 35% stearic acid and 5% beeswax. Candles had been a source of getting light in the past, and also today. Candles were used to enhance the beauty of the atmosphere and the surroundings. The candles have also been used as a source of decoration in past. Nowadays candles are also used as a source of light in case of failure of light and also used as a source of decoration. Candles not only provide heat and warmth to the people, but also provide calmness, relaxation and comfort. |
